Keep your email list clean
Keep your email database clean with simple tips.
Clean email databases can lead to higher conversion rates and better click-through rates.
In life we tend to gather “things” as we move from one stage of life to another. We have toys from our youth and pictures from high school all sitting around somewhere. As a business, you could say, does the same thing with email addresses and customer data. In this post I am going to give you five tips on keeping your email lists nice and clean.
Clean regularly – every six to 12 months send out an email to your entire list to make sure that they are still interested in your business. Yes – opt these people into your email list again. Remove the people that do not want to get email from and also take out the hard bounce email addresses. This is most likely going to reduce the size of your email lists, but this is a good thing because you have people on your list that want to be getting communication from you.
Segment your list – make sure that you break up your list into sub-sets of people. This way you can send out email to people that have a specific interests. This type of micro-targeting can really drive interactions and engagement when you send out your emails.Email programs like MailChimp or ConstantContact can guide you in your list building/segmentation efforts.
Remove bounces – after an email is sent out be sure to remove any hard bounced email addresses. This will reduce your email list size but it has benefits from an ISP perspective (they will know that you aren’t just trying to spam people).
Source data – it is helpful to see the source of where your email addresses came from. Did you get a bunch of email addresses from Facebook or Twitter? If you are able to keep a campaign tied to an email address it will help you generate future campaigns based on past success.
Finally, be sure to always look at your open rate, click-through rates, bounce rates and unsubscribes. Being proactive with your email list doing some regular maintenance will help you get the most out of your email program.
